Abstract

This study was done during 2012 to 2014 to determine the species composition of thrips on fruit trees and weeds of orchards in three counties of Qazvin Province (i.e. Buin-Zahra, Takestan and Qazvin). For each county 14 orchards were sampled. In each orchard, 10 trees and from each tree four shoots along with their leaves, flowers and fruits were selected as a sample unit. Diversity was calculated by Shannon-Wiener Index and evenness by Pielou evenness index. Species richness was estimated using the first-order jackknife richness estimator. One-way ANOVA was used to test whether there exists significant variation in species diversity, evenness and richness along the three counties. Of the 4,489 adult collected specimens from three locations, 27 species belonging to 13 genera were identified. The highest number of thrips was collected on plants of family Rosaceae, followed by Vitaceae and Moraceae, respectively. The number of collected species in Qazvin (18) and Buin-Zahra (17) counties were more than Takestan (13) county. Similar trend was observed for the total number of adult specimens collected in the three counties as more specimens were found in Qazvin and Buin-Zahra than Takestan. Results of this study showed that Thrips tabaci L. was found on all species of fruit trees and weeds. There were no significant differences among the three counties in terms of both diversity (P = 0.41) and evenness (P = 0.45). Across the counties, thrips estimated richness was higher in Qazvin county compared to Buin-Zahra and Takestan counties. Among the trees in Buin-Zahra and Takestan counties, grape had the highest thrips diversity. The highest value of diversity for Qazvin county was recorded for apricot. The polyphagous species T. tabaci was dominant in all three counties, followed by Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (in Qazvin county), Frankliniella intonsa (Trybom) (in Buin-Zahra county) and Frankliniella tenuicornis (Uzel) (in Takestan county).

Abstract

Nowadays, the Flipped Classroom (FC) as a new model has become a trend in education especially due to the popularity of online education. Besides, today, social networking has found its way into education so that teachers and learners can use social media as a platform to streamline the educational process. Indeed, social networking has also become a well-known way of teaching that is shifting education while teachers and students work together in class. Furthermore, learners are often provided with new opportunities through social network platforms, and access to new models of communication to interact. Building on self-determination theories, the literature review considers the teachers’ motivation as one of the pivotal concerns about FC and it also puts more emphasis on the role of teachers’ engagement in higher education. Consequently, this review makes an effort to consider both issues, namely teachers’ motivation, and engagement within the process of FC through social networking. Overall, some implications are suggested for language stakeholders in an educational environment to consider the important issues in the process of implementing FC such as various kinds of educational platforms to increase their motivation and engagement.

Abstract

Dyadic Data Analysis (DDA) has been suggested, in the existing literature, to be used to explore interpersonal variables which have long been conventionally investigated in isolation. DDA is effective in analyzing procedures that go on among dyads in studies of family relations, partnership, teacher-student affairs, and many other interpersonal relationships. Illustrative examples come from psychological, behavioral, and sociological studies that help develop the researcher's ability to investigate relationship processes, model and test for the effects of actors, partners, and relationships, and control for the statistical inter-dependence which can be conceived between partnersThe present paper first reviews the distinctive features of DDA and the potential advantages it can have for language studies. Also, it shows how longitudinal DDA is strongly needed in the investigation of L2 affective variables in the Second Language Acquisition (SLA) domain to longitudinally explore the dynamic and developmental nature of language learners’ affective factors. Finally, it goes on with making suggestions for a future line of inquiry using this innovative analytic procedure and ends with several conclusive remarks about this analytical framework which is compatible with the complexity of dynamic systems theory (CDST).

Abstract

Several languages displayed in Language Landscape (LL) in tourism cities are foremost to be explored since they can depict the battle and position of each language. As China has a tight cooperation with Indonesia and other countries, Mandarin has begun to be utilized in the public sphere, such as in the LL. Thus, this present study intends to analyze the use and position of Mandarin, the underlying reasons for using Mandarin, society’s perspective, and its implication. The qualitative method was applied in which all data were explained descriptively by engaging documentation and a questionnaire for data collection. The former was done through the 831 signs displayed in tourism cities in East Java (27 Mandarin LL involved). The latter was conducted through the 127 responses from various backgrounds: old and younger generations. The results indicate that (1) Mandarin LL with top-down signs get a higher percentage than bottom-up signs in which Mandarin is in the fourth position, (2) the utilization of Mandarin in LL is to reveal their identity of the LL owner, (3) it is not vital to display Mandarin in LL due to the lack knowledge of it. Even if societies have negative perceptions of Mandarin, they confess that Mandarin is extensively spread due to its fast growth in any sector. Consequently, this study is crucial to give a wake-up call to the government and speakers of indigenous languages that they should take essential action to preserve the position of local-ethnic languages in LL.

Abstract

Dominating people’s lives, Social Media (SM) has gained a special place in every individual’s life in terms of becoming a tool to communicate with peers, families, and friends. Providing innovative functionalities, like forming groups, liking, reacting, and motivating, to modernize digital schooling, has made SM pervasive among students and teachers. The present paper tries to conceptually review and discuss the applicability of positive psychology in EFL education along with social-media-based language learning. Recently, in favor of distance learning, the world has witnessed a dramatic change in education, particularly in L2 learning, happening through social media (SM). However, there is a lack of a systematic study on the application of positive psychology in social media-based language learning, Therefore, it can be helpful to consider the effects of social media on L2 learning from a positive psychology perspective. As a first step in the field, the study aims to clarify how learners’ positiveness can bring about success and flourishment in social media-based L2 learning. Afterward, potential pedagogical implications and limitations are explained. With the hope of expanding the literature on PP in social-media-based Language learning, suggestions for future studies are proposed.

Abstract

In this research, a novel formulation of sponge cake was studied. Instant Tea Powder (ITP) with high ester-catechins content was used to replace 0, 7.5, 12.5, and 17.5% of flour to make sponge cakes, hereafter referred to as the control, ITP1, ITP2, and ITP3, respectively. The microbiological analysis and lipid oxidation experiments were conducted and the odor, flavor, color, chewiness, and overall acceptability of different samples were assessed by sensory evaluation. There was significant difference between ITP2 and the control in hedonic sensory evaluation results, whereas, ITP3 was rated lowest in sensory evaluation results. The results also showed the sponge cakes with ITP had good antimicrobial and antioxidant activity compared with the control, and the shelf life of ITP-treated cakes could be extended as a consequence.

Abstract

The alternative use of non-selective herbicides in different years will reduce the possibility of weeds resistance to herbicide by avoiding the crops constant exposure to herbicide selection pressure. The photoperiod-sensitive genic male sterile (PGMS) rice with herbicide resistance will be convenient to the mechanization of hybrid seed production and weed control. In order to develop double herbicide tolerant transgenic PGMS rice, the optimized Epspsgene and the Bar gene were jointly introduced into 7001S, a japonica PGMS rice, by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The coding sequence of Epsps gene was optimized based on the codon usage of rice genes and the function of optimized Epspsgene was validated by real-time PCR analysis, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of EPSPS protein, and herbicide resistant assay in the obtained independent transformants. The highest relative expression level of EPSPS protein in leaf reached 9.02% of the total soluble proteins. The transformants of T2 generation withstood at least 3.332 g glyphosate /m2 at seedling stage, which was 2.7 times higher than that reported by Monsanto Company. The transformants harboring the optimized Epsps gene and Bar gene were also resistant to glyphosate and glufosinate simultaneously at seedling stage; the resistant dosages were 0.375 g glufosinate m-2 and 0.833 g glyphosate m-2.
