Abstract

PhD Student of TEFL, English Department, Faculty of Foreign Languages and The available empirical evidence on the long-term efficacy of written corrections is limited to the studies that have investigated the effect of focused feedback on improving grammatical accuracy of two specific aspects of English articles. It is clear that focused corrections, which target only one or two grammatical error types at a time, lack ecological validity in writing courses. The aim of the present study is to investigate the reaction of different structures to corrections which enjoy more validity in writing classes. Using a pretest-posttest design, the long-term reaction of three features of English grammar (articles, the infinitive, and the present unreal conditional) to mid-focused and unfocused written feedback and revision were investigated. The results showed that on the delayed posttest, which was administered one month after the feedback treatment, the performance of the students in the experimental groups was not significantly different from the control group and that there were no significant absolute gains in any of the groups compared with pretest scores.

Abstract

In recent years, the use of translation theories has become increasingly common in the field of Quranic translation, with the aim of creating a structured framework for evaluating these translations. Jean-Paul Vinay and Jean Darbelnet's book "Comparative Stylistics of French and English," which was first published in 1958, contains techniques that are widely used by translators. The present study aimed to examine the application of Vinay and Darbelnet's strategies in the translations of three Quranic translators, namely Niʻmatullāh Ṣāliḥī Najafābādī, Muḥammad ʻAlī Kūshā, and Karīm Zamānī. Using a descriptive, analytical, and confrontational method, the study evaluates the quality of their use of these strategies. The findings of the research indicate that, given the sanctity of the Quran and its unique linguistic features, the translators have tended to use literal translation more frequently than other components of direct translation. Among the indirect translation techniques, transposition has the highest frequency due to the differences in grammatical structures between Arabic and Persian. The adaptation technique, on the other hand, has a lower frequency due to cultural similarities between the two languages and the prohibition of excessive manipulation in Quranic translation. Zamānī and Kūshā have used indirect translation methods more frequently than Ṣāliḥī. In conclusion, this study sheds light on the use of Vinay and Darbelnet's translation strategies in the context of Quranic translation. It provides valuable insights into the approaches adopted by these three translators and highlights the importance of considering the linguistic and cultural nuances of both the source and target languages while translating the Quran.

Abstract

During the reign of Nasser al-Din Shah in Iran, Iranian thinkers became increasingly concerned with the education system. They realized the correlation between reforms in various areas and raising the public’s awareness and discussed the necessity of public education. Consequently, they emphasized the reformation of elementary education as the basis of public education. These thinkers’ approach to elementary education and the relevance of their solutions for reforming elementary education to the realities of the time and the principles of elementary education is the issue that will be studied in the present research by applying a descriptive-analytical method and using the works of the thinkers of that era. This research seeks to answer the question whether the solutions offered by the thinkers of the Nasseri Era to reform elementary education and make it public bore any correspondence to the realities of the time and the principles of elementary education.
Results of this research indicate that although the thinkers of that era had a proper conception of the role of elementary education in public education, by insisting on solutions such as reforming the alphabet, they were distanced from the realities of the time and the principles of elementary education.

Abstract

Higher education attainment and labour force participation, especially among females, have been increasing for the past decades in Iran. If labour market is not flexible enough to adjust with the new trends, it may have negative effect on female education and participation rate. In this paper, we investigate the effects of higher education attainment on labour force participation, with an emphasis on female education in Iran using the data from the household budget surveys for the period 2001-2007. We use a logit model with cross section and pooled data and control for personal and household characteristics such as age, gender, marriage, and family income. Our findings show that participation rate is at maximum for middle-aged groups, and the married people are of more participation rates in labor market than current and former singles. The results also indicate that probability of labour force participation increases with the level of education especially for females and decreases with the family income.
